The feelings had to come out after the narrow victory in the DFB Cup at 1. FC Union Berlin. FC Bayern really had to fight to get ahead – and is already looking forward to the cup final in Berlin in the spring with optimism.
Bayern, who are otherwise so used to success, rarely celebrate a victory. Joshua Kimmich stood in front of the guest block with his fists clenched and shouted about the victory at 1. FC Union Berlin. The team celebrated wildly and danced the pogo. The 3:2 (3:1) in the DFB Cup round of 16 was hard-fought and has the people of Munich dreaming of the DFB Cup final in the Berlin Olympic Stadium again after five long years.
“Fight halftime” – Vincent Kompany proud of the fight
“The second half was a fighting half,” said a happy Bayern coach Vincent Kompany on ZDF. “I hope we can go further and be in Berlin at some point. Then this game – and also how we played here – will count.”
What did he mean? That was probably the very serious performance of his team, which was really demanded by the Köpenick team. After the 2-0 lead thanks to an own goal from Ilyas Ansah and a header from Harry Kane, it initially looked like a clear affair for the Bundesliga leaders. But Union fought back, hit back twice despite a second own goal and came close to making it 3-3. Too close for the taste of Munich residents.
Joshua Kimmich: “Too entertaining, too exciting!”
Of course, this victory and progression – unlike what is usually the case – was not a given: “Absolutely,” confirmed Joshua Kimmich, who analyzed that his Bayern only managed to “get some playful moments” in the first half. Later it was just “just a lot of plowing and pounding”: “The second half was perhaps not that attractive to watch. Unfortunately, it was too entertaining and too exciting!”
Bayern’s goal is of course to reach the final in Berlin for the first time since 2020, said Kimmich. “Even if it’s still a bit away, it’s one of the most emotional games of the year when you can play in a final like that. An event like that is great, we want to be there.”
Final in Berlin: “We want to be there”
Like his coach, the six-man was happy that his team had saved the victory over the finish line. “I don’t know when we last got out of the cup over the winter. That’s why it was a very important victory: “Especially the way Union plays, something can always happen. It’s also a lot about second balls, defending standards, defending throw-ins, fighting, fighting. You can never feel safe. That’s why I’m happy that we defended it well and were very dangerous from set pieces.”
If that’s not a reason to scream your joy and dance in front of the guest block!
