On Saturday, Lindsey Vonn raced to her second win of the season in Zauchensee, one day later the ski stars had to take a break. The weather doesn’t cooperate.

The German hopefuls Emma Aicher and Kira Weidle-Winkelmann as well as superstar Lindsey Vonn have to take an involuntary break from racing on Sunday due to the weather. A few hours before the start, the Super-G in Zauchensee was canceled due to heavy snowfall during the night and strong winds, this was decided by the jury of the International Ski Federation (Fis) together with the local organizing committee. The jury felt that the required safety standard was no longer met.

After training on a shortened route on Thursday, the heavy snowfall made a second downhill training impossible on Friday. On Saturday, the descent on the Kälberloch route was significantly shortened due to the weather.

The approach in recent days was particularly annoying to one female driver. The Italian runner Sofia Goggia complained publicly: “Yesterday we were supposed to do the second training session, no one cleaned the slopes and we runners had to leave the hotel, even though we knew we wouldn’t be running,” she told the Austrian broadcaster ORF1 on Saturday. “Everyone knew that we should just slide down the line.”

Austria’s head coach Roland Assinger did not want to ignore Goggia’s alleged allegations that the skiers could be exploited: “We are an outdoor sport. The women were given the opportunity to look at the slopes again, which is an advantage. Then, after the weather report, it was decided that training could not take place. For me, Goggia’s criticism is excessive,” he said. 60 people were on duty for hours.

The association initially left it open whether and when Sunday’s race would be rescheduled. This means that Saturday’s departure remains the only race of the weekend. Emma Aicher came sixth in Lindsey Vonn’s second win of the season, while Kira Weidle-Winkelmann came in twelfth. For the Austrian local hero Magdalena Egger, however, the day ended bitterly: the 24-year-old had a violent fall and was transported away by helicopter. She suffered a torn cruciate ligament and other injuries to her right knee. The Olympic season is over for them.
