In the summer of 2024, Hamburg was all about the European Championship. In 2029 the DFB would like to have the women’s tournament takes place in Germany – the Hanseatic city only watches.

The German Football Association (DFB) has named the provisional venues for the 2029 European Football Championship-Hamburg is not one of them. Bremen will not play games either. A total of eleven cities are still in the race for the orientation of the tournament, including Hannover, Rostock and Wolfsburg. Since the UEFA only provides for eight venues for the tournament in the summer of 2029, three cities still have to be canceled by August.

The DFB left open why Hamburg and Bremen were not taken into account. The only said that the selection was made according to “clearly defined and transparently understandable criteria”, which are based on the UEFA requirements.

“The orientation of an European Championship would be a big step for the development of women’s football in Germany and Europe. We want to sell more than a million tickets and organize the first European Championships with an economic profit,” said DFB General Secretary Heike Ullrich.

In December 2025, UEFA decides on the venue of the tournament. In addition to Germany, Poland, Portugal, Italy and a joint host duo from Denmark and Sweden apply.

The DFB must submit the preliminary application by March 12, the final selection of the eight venues is due for June. Until August 27, the association has time to present the final documents.
