The women of FC Bayern Munich clearly defeat Valerenga Oslo and storm into the quarter-finals of the Champions League. This means they avoid the playoffs.

Actually, it was no longer in their own hands and the FC Bayern women still had to perform. In the Champions League home game against Vålerenga IF, the Munich team were clear favorites. But whether they managed to get into the top four of the table with a win and thus achieve direct qualification for the quarter-finals also depended on the outcome of the other Champions League games taking place at the same time on this sixth matchday.

Dream start for FC Bayern Women

The FC Bayern women started the game as dominantly as expected and already proved their role as favorites in the second minute: After a blocked shot, the ball landed on the right side to Franziska Kett, who passed it on to Momoko Tanikawa in the backcourt, who put the ball into the bottom left corner with a lot of feeling in her feet. 1-0 – a dream start for FC Bayern Women.

The initial phase belonged entirely to the Munich women. They pressed high and created a few chances. The Norwegians were under extreme pressure, but that didn’t excuse the inaction that followed in the 11th minute. Stine Ballisager started with the ball on the halfway line, was able to sprint unhindered across the opponent’s half to the penalty area and finish. Strong solo, nice shot – and it was 2-0.

Stanway misses a penalty

As the game progressed, Bayern created many opportunities. After chances from Stanway and Harder, the 3-0 would have been long overdue. Then the VAR reported: Michaela Kovacs did not have her arm against her body, the situation in the sixteen-yard box led to the penalty decision. But Georgia Stanway, who was actually a safe shooter, was denied by goalkeeper Tove Enblom, who fished the ball out of the corner.

Despite the Reds continuing to dominate, they were not consistent enough in the end and went into the break with a 2-0 lead.

Harder increases to 3:0

Even after the break, the number of chances was high, but the conversion left a lot to be desired. While the Munich team tried to put the ball into the net, the fan was happy to see the current standings in the table. Because Juventus was behind against Manchester United and Real Madrid was also behind against FC Twente, FC Bayern was temporarily in third place. That would be direct qualification for the quarter-finals.

A look back at the pitch and at someone who finally took advantage of their many opportunities. Bayern played patiently back and forth in front of the Vålerenga penalty area, Bühl found the gap and chipped the ball from the baseline into the center, where Harder this time ice-coldly headed in to make it 3-0 (58th).

Offside goal and final whistle

Even two double substitutions by the guests from Norway were unable to break Bayern’s dominance. After the third goal, however, you noticed that the Munich team slowed down a little. The 4-0 by Padilla-Bidas was overturned by VAR because Alara had previously been very narrowly offside.

When the four-minute stoppage time began, the fans in the stands could almost celebrate reaching the quarter-finals. On the pitch, Bayern played it to the end and won with a solid and deserved 3-0 win.

FC Bayern Women reach the quarter-finals with help

And what happened next? Juventus lost, Real Madrid was able to equalize, but even a draw wasn’t enough. The FC Bayern Women managed to save themselves to fourth place in the table and thus qualify directly for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
