SGS Essen still has to wait for its first win in the women’s Bundesliga. There was a narrow defeat against Werder Bremen.
The SGS Eat cannot prevent the seventh defeat in a row. Coach Jessica Wißmann’s team lost 2:3 (0:2) to Werder Bremen in the traditional stadium on Hafenstrasse and remains the same even after the 9th matchday Women’s Bundesliga still bottom of the table. Despite a committed performance and a few opportunities to score, it was no longer enough to equalize against the Hanseatic League in front of around 1,000 spectators. The interim 0-3 deficit was too big in the end.
Nevertheless, the Ruhr area team can build on this performance and go into the coming games with some self-confidence. The fighting, high-class performance in the second half, which the Essen women were able to complete in the majority for over half an hour, should at least give the bottom of the table hope of staying in the league.
Early backlog for food
The game had barely started when Bremen could have already taken the lead. But Werder attacker Medina Desic put a header from four meters away next to the Essen goal (2nd). Afterwards, a somewhat more open game developed, in which the Hanseatic women retained control of the action.
The SGS mostly had a lot of trouble leaving their own half. Bremen stayed on the trigger and used their second big scoring opportunity to take the lead. After a corner, the Essen team failed to get the ball out of the danger zone. The ball fell at the feet of Maja Sternad, who had no trouble making it 1-0 (15th) from six meters.
Essen fought back
And just a short time later, Bremen’s second goal followed against the overwhelmed Essen team. After beautiful combinations over several stations, Desic did better in the second attempt and converted her header from six meters to make it 2-0 (21st).
Coach Wißmann’s team tried to defend themselves against another defeat, but for a long time the players lacked the playful means to assert themselves decisively against the Hanseatic team. Apart from a few offensive approaches, the team initially hardly developed any offensive actions worth mentioning.
Papai alone
But in the 35th minute, Kassandra Potsi suddenly had the chance to score after some nice preparatory work from Leonie Köpp, but she didn’t hit the goal with a direct shot from five meters. Afterwards, the Essen women looked inspired and put the Bremen women under pressure.
But as soon as the second half started, Emöke Papai, who had just come on as a substitute, made the preliminary decision in favor of Bremen with a solo effort over almost 60 meters and an ice-cold finish to make it 3-0 (51st). The yellow-red card for Sternad (53rd) after repeated foul play shortly afterwards gave the Essen team hope again.
Essen scored two goals
The Essen women tried everything again. With (partial) success. Vanessa Fürst flicked the ball into the Bremen box from 18 meters away to make it 1:3 (64′). Even after that, the hosts tried to exploit their advantage and somehow still equalize.
The Wißmann team developed great dominance against the bravely defending Bremen team and had a few promising approaches to goal. The second goal for the SGS should then come. Laureta Elmazi Elmazi fired a rather unplaced shot, but the ball bounced from Bremen goalkeeper Mariella El Sherif’s thigh to the inside post, from there to her head – and then behind the line.
The hosts then threw everything into it again, but it wasn’t enough to equalize.
