Women’s Bundesliga: Leverkusen annoys leaders Wolfsburg

As of: February 5, 2024 11:40 a.m

Bayer Leverkusen picked up a point against leaders VfL Wolfsburg in the Women’s Bundesliga, giving Bayern Munich a chance to take the lead.

The cup winners from Wolfsburg surprisingly only managed a 1-1 (1-0) draw at Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday (February 4, 2024) – the champions from Munich are two points behind and will host SC Freiburg on Monday evening.

National team captain Alexandra Popp took advantage of one of Wolfsburg’s many opportunities in the first half with a header (37′). The favorite was also superior afterwards, but failed to decide the game early on. This took revenge after a yellow-red card against Marina Hegering (72nd): Leverkusen’s Emilie Bragstad scored with her shin to equalize a minute later. Joelle Wedemeyer (90+3) failed to hit the crossbar for VfL.

Cologne’s crisis is getting worse

The footballers from RB Leipzig achieved an immensely important victory in the relegation battle of the women’s Bundesliga on Saturday (February 3, 2024). With the 2:1 (1:0) at the start of the second half of the season against 1. FC Köln, the promoted team celebrated their first success since the end of September 2023 – and against a direct competitor.

Vanessa Fudalla (8th) and Marlene Müller (75th) scored for the hosts, Martyna Wiankowska (90th + 1) scored the next goal with a penalty in the final phase for FC, who had not won since the beginning of November. The Leipzig team (9 points) moved within one point of the Cologne team and, at least for the time being, out of the relegation zone.

Bankruptcy for Nuremberg

1. FC Nuremberg is now there. After a goalless first half, the promoted team were beaten 4-0 by Werder Bremen. With the win, Werder temporarily climbed to fifth place in the table. The goals for the Hanseatic League were scored by Michelle Ulbrich (62nd hand penalty, 72nd) and Juliane Wirtz (82nd), older sister of national player Florian Wirtz. Nuremberg’s Lara Schmidt (89th) also scored an own goal.
