It’s Weezer Wednesday. The band has released “We Might As Well Be Strangers,” a new single feat. Wednesday, gave a taste of their upcoming studio album “Weezer”, which will be released on August 21st. “Shine Again” was released in April as the first release from the album.

“Gold-plated, as surface instruments would call gold. It bears the name Weezer. Its surface is marked with four symbols believed to represent its creators,” Weezer wrote on Instagram in a caption, which accompanied the album’s brilliant gold cover. “Carry it with you to the Gathering, and bear witness to what follows.”

The ten-song album is Weezer’s first studio album in five years – after “Van Weezer” from 2021. This time they brought producers Klas Ahlund and Kenneth Blume on board, who wanted to create “the most violent Weezer album of all time”. Weezer looks both back to the band’s legacy and into the future – and will be brought to life live on the upcoming Weezer: The Gathering Tour, which kicks off in September.

Recordings completed

In February, Rivers Cuomo confirmed via Weezer’s Discord channel that the band had completed recording the album. Fans had already heard various versions of individual tracks, including “Up in the Clouds,” which was originally created as a demo during the sessions for 2014’s “Everything Will Be Alright in the End.”

In 2023, Cuomo told Collider that the band’s next album would contain a song called “CEO,” which would serve as a sequel to “The Sweater Song.” “It’s totally meta and mind-blowing,” he said. With an album and tour in the pipeline, fans of the band have a lot to expect. Last year, Cuomo also confirmed during their Coachella performance, “We’ve been busy in LA for the last few weeks filming the Weezer movie.”
