The footballers of 1. FC Nürnberg suffered a painful defeat against Union Berlin at the end of the year.

The club women could have crowned their great first half of the season in the women’s Bundesliga with a win in the start of the second half of the season against Union Berlin. But coach Thomas Oostendorp’s team lost the duel between the promoted teams 1:2 (1:2). The home team was too harmless on offense and gave out too many defensive gifts four days before Christmas Eve.

Club women give out too many gifts

For a long time, goal area scenes were in short supply in Nuremberg’s Max Morlock Stadium. It was only after a good half hour that the Union team got closer thanks to a header from Lisa Heiseler (35′). A minute later, Julia Pollak cleared the ball to the feet of Eileen Campbell, who scored from close range to give the visitors the lead (35′). And the home team remained in the spirit of giving and awarded a hand penalty just two minutes later. Beatrix Fördös had the ball accidentally hit her arm during a cross, but the penalty decision also resulted from a very strict interpretation of the rules.

Polaskova counters Union’s double strike before the break

Union captain Heiseler didn’t care. She converted safely to make it 0-2 from Nuremberg’s perspective (38th). The club women were only shocked for a short time. Just two minutes later, Aneta Polaskova was successful with a long-range shot (40th). We went into the break 1-2, but nothing happened in the second half. The club women had to pay tribute to the workload of the last few weeks and were no longer dangerous in front of the goal. For the capital city team, Heiseler missed the chance to make it 3-1 in stoppage time. It wasn’t enough for more. Thanks to the defeat, the club women let Union Berlin, which now also has 15 points, move up in the table. The gap to the relegation places is still eight points.
