Game scene of the Bundesliga game of Wolfsburg women against SV Werder Bremen.

Status: 24.09.2025 9:25 a.m.

VfL Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen also started the new season of the women’s Bundesliga thanks to later goals. Both northern clubs are on the same way in front of the direct duel. Can the SVW beat the “wolf” for the first time?

Camilla Küver and Emöke Pápai are the youngest last-minute heroine of the two north clubs. Küver met on the last match day in the seventh minute of stoppage time for the acclaimed 2-1 for the Wolfsburg women at 1. FC Köln. Pápai had scored the 2-1 for the SVW in the 90th minute against TSG Hoffenheim.

Wolfsburg's players cheer a goal

VfL played over long distances of the game, but secured the three points shortly before the end. There is concern about Alexandra Popp, who has been replaced injured.

“Wolves” and SVW are last-minute experts

Both the “wolf” and the Werder women are something like last minute expert in the young Bundesliga season. The VfL has already secured four points – even if at the start with a late goal in Hamburg (3: 3) two points – against Jena (3: 1) and Cologne in the final phase (last ten minutes of stoppage time). The Bremen women as well: with a late 1: 1 against Freiburg and the victory over the TSG.

And so both teams meet today (7 p.m., in the NDR LiveCenter) after two wins and a draw tabular at eye level and, along with Freiburg and Master Bayern Munich, belong to a quartet of seven-point teams.

Wolfsburg – Werder: So far 15 VfL victories and a draw

However, the history of the duels of both north clubs is as one -sided as it could hardly be more one -sided. There were 15 Wolfsburg victories and a draw in 16 duels. That was a good year ago, on the first matchday of last season there was a wild 3: 3 in Wolfsburg. At that time, the Werder women celebrated the first point against the “wolves”.

Well in place, it seems that the Werder women under the new trainer Fritzy Kromp could take the next step – the first success of the Lower Saxons is at least conceivable. What is due to your own development. But also in the upheaval and the (still) lack of stability of VfL.

“Of course we still have to work on the exploitation of opportunities and that we get a little more control and clarity in our game.”

Wolfsburg coach Stephan Lerch

Werder attacker Larissa Mühlhaus, goal scorer of the meantime 1-0 against Hoffenheim, draws optimism from the fact that the team against the Kraichgau women “defended well and did it as a team. On the offensive she sees potential for improvement: “In some scenes, we lacked the last conviction to bring the ball to the goal, we still have to work on it.”

Wolfsburg’s trainer returnee Stephan Lerch also presented a similar “finding” after the shaky victory in Cologne for his team: “Of course we still have to work on the exploitation of opportunities and that we get a little more control and clarity in our game.”

Popp use questionable

With a view to the previous games, but also for the direct duel with the north competitors, Lerch said: “On the first days of the game this season, people saw everywhere that the games are very narrow and can decide little things.”

It is questionable whether Alexandra Popp can help you swing the pendulum on the side of VfL Wolfsburg. A bruise of the right lower leg was diagnosed with the long -standing international on Monday after incoming investigations. The 34-year-old will not be in the long term. Your use in the northern duel is uncertain.
