Triumph for VfB Stuttgart, clap for SC Freiburg: In the Baden-Württemberg state duel on the third day of the Bundesliga match, the Swabians celebrated a resounding victory against the Breisgauer.

VfB Stuttgart who had already won his home game against VfL Bochum 5-0 on the first matchdaywas extremely determined against the guest from Freiburg.

Chris Führich (8th minute) opened the scoring for the Swabians, who played effectively from the start. Serhou Guirassy (17′, 19′) scored twice in the first half. In the second round, Führich (62nd) and Enzo Millot (75th) increased again against defensively desolate guests. In the end, the Stuttgart team deservedly won 5-0 against the Sport-Club, who suffered their first bankruptcy of the current season after two successes at the start.

Both teams with a change

VfB Stuttgart last won against Freiburg in 2018 and wanted to end the black series in the Baden-Württemberg state duel. In the Swabians, coach Sebastian Hoeneß made a change compared to the previous week (1: 5 at RB Leipzig) before. Newcomer Angelo Stiller moved into the starting XI for Lilian Egloff. There was also a change at SC Freiburg. Coach Christian Streich brought on Michael Gregoritsch for Ritsu Doan from the start.

Freiburg with a better start, VfB with the goal

The guests from Breisgau got off to a better start. After a cross from Kiliann Sildillia, Gregoritsch failed with a header at VfB keeper Alexander Nübel (3rd). After the following corner, Matthias Ginter’s header touched the crossbar of the Stuttgart goal, Philipp Lienhart was unable to control the rebound, so that Nübel grabbed the ball (4th).

A little later, VfB struck. Stiller served Führich on the left. The offensive player pulled in at speed, left his Freiburg opponent Sildillia and finished with a right placed in the far post. SC keeper Noah Atubolu had no chance, 1-0 for the home side (7th).

Double pack by Serhou Guirassy

And the Swabians kept up the pressure. Silas narrowly missed (12′) before playing again just under 20 meters in front of the Freiburg goal for Guirassy. The goalscorer turned around his opponent and hit low into the left corner to make it 2-0 (17th). Two minutes later, Hiroki Ito supplied Guirassy with a cross from the left. The attacker was completely blank five meters from the goal of the sports club and increased to 3:0 (19th). Guirassy’s fifth goal of the season in game three.

Freiburg with defective defensive performance

Stuttgart then continued to play forward in euphoria, Guirassy, Silas and Führich were almost impossible to get a grip on the Freiburg defense. The defense of the Breisgauers was correct without the injured captain Christian Günter almost nothing.

After a good half hour, the SC got into the game a little better – also due to the fact that VfB slowed down a bit. The guests didn’t create any clear chances, while the home side largely controlled the game. Only when Roland Sallai had a shot did VfB goalkeeper Nübel have to intervene (33′). So it was 3-0 for Stuttgart at the break.

VfB had the first opportunity in the second half. However, Dan-Axel Zagadou shot over the Freiburg goal from a tight angle (51st). On the other side, Maximilian Philipp’s header narrowly missed the Stuttgart box (53′). In the 55th minute, Guirassy only missed a few centimeters after a strong pass from Silas.

Chris Führich with the fourth goal for VfB

Not enough came from Freiburg – especially given the clear deficit. Stuttgart had more offensive actions and kept waiting for counterattacks with their fast wingers. And a similar one led to success in the 62nd minute: Ex-Freiburger Jeong Woo-yeong, who switched to VfB in the summer, sent Führich steeply down the left flank. Again the winger went inside, again he left a Freiburger with Kenneth Schmidt and again he hit the right – this time into the bottom left corner – to make it 4-0 for the home side.

With that, the game was as good as decided. Stuttgart countered again after Merlin Röhl lost the ball. After a pass from Atakan Karazor, substitute Enzo Millot scored to make it 5-0 (75′). More goals would have been possible, but VfB lacked consistency in the closing stages.

Record for VfB Stuttgart

So it stayed 5-0. VfB was particularly strong on the two flanks and extremely effective in converting chances. The Swabians now have six points – just like the guests from Freiburg. The sports club owed almost everything and was particularly disappointing defensively. And Stuttgart can look forward to a record: the Swabians have never scored eleven goals after three games.
