Wim Jonk: “Feeling that we were going to win, until the red card”

It ended in 1-1 between FC Volendam and AZ, but there could have been more for the Palingboeren. Coach Wim Jonk agreed afterwards. “You feel that you are going to win, but that red card from Gaetano Oristanio makes it a bit different. Fortunately, we didn’t get another goal after the 1-1.”

Jonk speaks of a ‘separate’ second half. “You deserve 1-0 and you feel that you are going to win. Gaetano Oristanio’s red card made things a little different. It quickly became 1-1 and then you go through the scenarios in your head. Fortunately, we got after the equalizer not another goal around.”

The coach of Volendam was very ‘proud’ of his team. “I gave the boys a big compliment. They played really good football and it’s nice that you still have a point left. That gives you courage for the upcoming match.”

Derry Jonk Murkin made a blatant mistake with Jens Odgaard’s equalizer. He lost the ball, so that the attacker hit the target. “I should have handled that ball better. The goal fell because of my mistake, otherwise we would have won this match. I am still sick of that.”

“We played compactly in the first half and they couldn’t get through,” Murkin said. “We continued that nicely after the break, but after the red card they got through it a bit easier. Fortunately, we then defended as a team and got a good point.”

FC Volendam is stuck in fifteenth place after the draw. FC Twente will be the opponent of the Palingboeren next week.
