After February 12th, all lots will be reshuffled. But in the twelve town halls of the districts from Reinickendorf to Zehlendorf, mayors and the five city councilors are allowed to keep their jobs for well over three years. choice doesn’t matter?

“It cannot be that nothing changes in the districts if all of Berlin chooses again,” criticized CDU General Stefan Evers (43) to BZ And: “There will be a lot of discussion.” The Constitutional Court has decided on this question not voiced.

The following applies: City councilors and district mayors are in office at least until the end of the legislative period (September 2026). Exception: You are voted out by the assembly of district councilors (BVV) with a two-thirds majority. A very high hurdle.

“They have ongoing contracts. You have to think about it carefully, because it’s about a lot of money,” says Linken boss Katina Schubert (60).

How much? If a member of the district office is recalled before the end of his term of office, he will receive another three months’ salary – then 71.75 percent of his salary as a pension. Makes 7171 euros/month with a district mayor and 6381 euros a month with your city council.

At the end of the term of office, i.e. in autumn 2026, a district office member can retire if they have previously been in office for eight years as mayor or city councillor.
