A swinging shaman, a kitty pig, a macho monkey, a disco pig and a gospel horse. While singing, they will be on the stage of the footfall association in Almkerk on Friday, in honor of the club’s 80th anniversary. Whoever is in the costumes is the big question during this local version of The Masked Singer.
The idea for a local variant of the popular RTL program was created four years ago in Coronatijd. “We had already organized a bingo once and wanted to do something else, do something more original,” says Leonie van Suijlekom, chairman of the activity committee of VV Almkerk.
So The Masked Almkerker Born, an online YouTube series. Well -known residents from the village were hoisted in a carnival suit. For example, physiotherapist Erwin Verbruggen from Fysiofit Altena turned into a bull, firefighter Wilbert van Steenis into a monkey and hairdresser Liane side of Kapsalon Likalookz into a unicorn.
“The whole village was under the spell.”
Former district agent Job van Breugel also helped with the videos. He interviewed the participants so that viewers could collect hints at home about who was in the suits. And that caught on. The first episode has been viewed more than 2,300 times. And that is a lot for a village with 3,720 inhabitants. “The whole village was under the spell,” says Leonie.

Because of the thunderous success, turns The Masked Almkerker Friday evening back for the 80th anniversary of the football club. This time not online, but at the club itself. A panna workshop and a specialty beer evening was also held there this week, in honor of the anniversary. On Saturday there is a football tournament with 28 teams on the program.
But first The Masked Almkerker. The five masked singers who participate must be searched for this edition a little closer to the football club, gives Leonie as a tip. “Think of former members, volunteers or trainers.”
“It is discussed daily in the Albert Heijn.”
Leonie notices that there is again a lot of speculation in the village about who during the second edition of The Masked Almkerker will be in the suits anyway. “Different names go around in the group app of the football club,” she says. “And it is discussed daily in the Albert Heijn.”
