WHO experts talk about lifting state of emergency for Covid-19 | Abroad

International experts are today discussing the possibility of lifting the international public health emergency due to Covid-19. This has been announced by the World Health Organization (WHO).

A decision would not be announced until Monday at the earliest, WHO sources said. The experts review the latest data on the pandemic during an online meeting.

After the debate, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will then be briefed, after which he must make a decision on whether or not to lift the state of emergency.

Tedros expressed concern over Covid-19 death rates earlier this week. Since early December, more than 170,000 people worldwide have died after contracting the coronavirus, WHO data shows. In China alone, 40,000 deaths from Covid-19 were reported last week.

Declaring a state of emergency or lifting it has no immediate consequences. Each country decides on its own crisis approach.
