Graham Greene, most famous for his Oscar-nominated role in “Who dances with the wolf”, died on Monday in Stratford, Ontario, at the age of 73. The Canadian first nation actor died in the hospital after a long illness, as his agent Michael Greene announced.
Early life and career start
“He was a great man with morality, ethics and character and will be missed forever,” said Greene (not related) in a statement (via “The Hollywood Reporter”). “You are finally free.”
Greene was born on June 22, 1952 in Ohsweken, on the Six Nation Reserve in Ontario, Canada. He came to acting by chance after he had previously done various jobs. He helped to build the Center for Indigenous Theater Program and played in the professional theater in the 1970s. He gave his TV debut in 1979 in the Canadian series “The Great Detective”. He had his first film role in 1983 in the Biopic “Running Brave”.
“I started as a carpenter, welder, draftsman, carpet layer, roadie and sound engineer,” said Greene 2018 to the “Reader’s Digest Canada”. “I stumbled into acting and thought: ‘These people let me sit in the shade, give me food and water, bring me to where I say something, then bring me back. Wow – that’s the life of a dog!'”
Breakthrough in Hollywood
Greene made the breakthrough in Hollywood when Kevin Costner occupied him in “Who dances with the wolf” as a Lakota-Sioux medicine man Kicking Bird. The role brought him an Oscar nomination as the best supporting actor and started his international career. This was followed by films such as “Thunderheart”, “Maverick”, “Stirb Slowly – now even more so”, “The Green Mile”, “Molly’s Game” and “Twilight Saga: New Moon”.
Most recently, Greene was seen in successful TV series such as Taika Waititis “Reservation Dogs”, “The Last of U” S as well as Taylor Sheridan’s “1883” and “Tulsa King”. He also played Skully in Marvel’s “Echo” on Disney+.
Versatile role choice
Although Greene became famous by indigenous roles, he always tried to present a wider range of figures. After “who dances with the wolf”, he instructed his agents to look for other roles so as not to be set to an image.
“I tend to go on in my career and choose roles that are unique and different,” said Greene 2021. “I played God twice. Abine judges, lawyers, doctors, police officers and detectives played. The variety of roles is what I like. not.”
Awards and legacy
During his career, Greene won numerous prizes, including the Grammy for the best spoken children’s album “Listen to the storyteller” in 2000. He remained active until his death. His last film, the thriller “Ice Fall” with Joel Kinnaman, is still about to publish.
Colleagues and companions intended Greene after his death. “On the ground. Terrible about the death of Graham Green at the age of 73,” wrote Lou Diamond Phillips on X. “From Wolf Lake to Longmire we had a wonderful friendship. One of the actors through and through. One of the funniest, smartest and warmest people I have ever known. Iconal and legendary. Quiet in peace, my brother.”
