Whistles in Dortmund – BVB loses home game after taking the lead

TSG Hoffenheim was unable to win eight games in a row. Now it was off to top club Borussia Dortmund, of all places.

BVB gave up a 2-1 lead against TSG Hoffenheim and lost 2-3. After eight Bundesliga games without defeat, coach Edin Terzić’s team failed to increase their lead over Rasenballsport Leipzig to four points. For TSG Hoffenheim, the victory was the end of a series of eight games without a win. The match winner was double goalscorer Maximilian Beier. Many BVB fans in Signal Iduna Park acknowledged the defeat with a concert of whistles, but there was encouragement from the “yellow wall”.

That’s how the game went

BVB coach Edin Terzić still had to do without Niklas Süle, who was ill, and Mats Hummels, who was also not completely fit, initially took a seat on the bench. Emre Can therefore moved into central defense and that had direct consequences in front of 81,365 spectators. The captain played the ball sloppily towards the inattentive Schlotterbeck, Ihlas Bebou was attentive, intercepted the ball – and remained ice cold in front of goalkeeper Alexander Meyer (2nd minute).

The Dortmund team shook briefly and then quickly took control of the game. Marcel Sabitzer (7th/9th) recorded the first shots. BVB kept the tempo high and almost equalized by scoring. But Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann made a strong save (21′).

A short time later, the in-form Dutchman was able to celebrate. Marco Reus headed a corner from Julian Brandt and Malen pushed the ball over the line from close range (21′).

The guests were also unsure defensively afterwards; the long series without success visibly affected their self-confidence. The lead of the enthusiastic Dortmund team was the logical consequence. After a free kick from Reus, Schlotterbeck headed the ball into the goal (25th). On the other hand, Umut Tohumcu didn’t hit the ball correctly in a promising position (27th).

The second half started badly for the guests. Robert Skov limped off the field after just a few minutes and was replaced by David Jurasek.

TSG now became more courageous, while BVB became more passive. The Black and Yellows had no trace of the momentum of the first half. Reus also stood in the way of a shot by Niclas Füllkrug (56′).

When Ryerson made a bad pass in front of his own penalty area shortly afterwards, Beier aimed too high without being forced (57′). He had better luck with his deflected shot four minutes later, then the striker punished Dortmund for another loss of the ball with his second goal. Can (90.+3) headed over the goal from five meters shortly before the end.

There was a stir shortly before about an alleged handball in the Hoffenheim penalty area. But Marco Fritz and the VAR decided against a penalty for BVB.
