Rumors that sports director Markus Krösche could leave the SGE before his working paper, which is dated until 2028, expires, are not new. Even if the club boss, who is courted by AC Milan, is not likely to say goodbye this summer, Eintracht Frankfurt is apparently already preparing for Krösche’s departure and has set its sights on a possible successor.

As the “FAZ” reports, Marcel Schäfer is a candidate for the Krösche legacy at Eintracht Frankfurt. The former Bundesliga professional has been working as sports director in Leipzig since April 2024 after being fired in the same position at VfL Wolfsburg. The 42-year-old was recently linked with a return to Lower Saxony, but this did not materialize.

According to information from the daily newspaper, Schäfer was not too happy at Cottaweg that he was not involved in the upcoming separation from head coach Ole Werner. It is said that he reacted to the decision to part ways with the former Werder coach after just one season with “astonishment and incomprehension”. His Red Bull future seems questionable.

Eintracht Frankfurt: Markus Krösche will probably be gone by 2027 at the latest

This is also why the former left-back is a candidate for Eintracht Frankfurt, according to the “FAZ”. Schäfer is on the Eagle Bearers’ list for the “immediate” and “foreseeable” future, the paper reports. It is still unclear when the position of sports director in the Main metropolis will become vacant. According to “Bild”, it is likely that incumbent Markus Krösche will leave by 2027 at the latest.

The ex-SC Paderborn professional is already being heavily courted and is reportedly high on AC Milan’s wish list. According to “Bild”, the prestigious Serie A club is fundamentally an attractive destination for Krösche himself, especially since he would apparently not only be offered a position as sports director there, but also an office that is higher up in the hierarchy.

But: On the Main, they don’t expect Krösche to approach the club management with a request for a change. That’s exactly what the ex-professional would have to do, as his contract with Eintracht Frankfurt, which runs until 2028, contains an exit clause, but it is no longer valid for this summer. The SGE management would have to give Krösche the go-ahead for a possible move to Milan.
