According to US President Trump, the USA and Iran have agreed on a framework agreement to end the war. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will be lifted. Mediator Pakistan had previously also announced an agreement.

After weeks of negotiations, the USA and Iran have agreed on framework conditions for an end to the war, according to mediator Pakistan and the US government. “After intensive discussions, we are pleased to announce that the peace agreement between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran has been reached,” wrote Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the X platform.

Shortly afterwards, US President Donald Trump also confirmed the conclusion of an agreement with Iran. In his network Truth Social, he announced that the Strait of Hormuz, which is important for international oil trade, would be reopened with the signing of the agreement on Friday. “Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” said Trump. The reason for the delay until the end of the week is necessary mine clearance work.

The Iranian news agency Tasnim also reported, citing unnamed sources, that the strait would be opened following the signing of a framework agreement on Friday.

Official signing next Friday

Sharif said both sides assured the immediate and definitive end to military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. According to him, the official signing ceremony will take place on Friday in Switzerland. According to the Tasnim news agency, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kasem Gharibabadi also said that the text of the framework agreement had been finalized.

No further details have yet been disclosed regarding the contents of the agreement. However, the framework agreement is only an interim step. Other important agreements in the conflict between the two countries, such as the nuclear dispute, are to be negotiated in detail during further talks.

Merz: Implement the agreement “purposefully”.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) welcomed the agreement between the USA and Iran. “The agreement can pave the way for a recovery of the global economy and a stabilization of the region,” said Merz on Monday night. At the same time, the Chancellor called for “what was agreed to be implemented in a targeted manner.” The Strait of Hormuz, which is important for global trade in oil and liquid gas, must be “permanently and unrestrictedly opened to free shipping,” emphasized Merz.

In addition, further negotiations “in the next few weeks must ensure that Iran verifiably ends its military nuclear program.” There should also be “no further attacks against Israel and other neighbors in the region.”

French President Emmanuel Macron announced talks about permanently opening the Strait of Hormuz at the G7 summit starting today in Evian, France. “The aim will be to shed light on the consequences of this agreement, support for Lebanon, the permanent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and, of course, the conclusion of an agreement on the nuclear and missile programs in Iran,” Macron said on Sunday evening in a video message published on the online service Instagram.

Attacks in Lebanon jeopardized agreement

In the last few hours the deal was once again on the brink. This was triggered by renewed mutual attacks in the conflict between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia. A Hezbollah attack on northern Israel was followed by an Israeli counterattack near Beirut on Sunday afternoon. Trump then warned Israel and called on all sides to show restraint. The attack near Beirut should not have taken place, “especially on a special day when we are so close to a peace agreement with Iran,” wrote the US president, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday.

The USA and Israel jointly started the war against Iran on February 28th. A formal ceasefire has been in effect since April – but mutual attacks have occurred several times. After the Israeli attacks, Iran questioned the possible agreement on a framework agreement with the USA. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard threatened Israel with counterattacks.

The Israeli army announced late in the afternoon that it was preparing for possible shelling of Israeli areas in the coming hours. A key condition for Iran in reaching an agreement with the US was an end to military actions on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
