The Beatles taught ABBA how to diversify their music in the first place. Benny Andersson said the four Liverpool mushroom heads inspired hits like “Thank You For The Music”. In an interview with Record Collector he said: “The Beatles were in a way always with themselves and their style, a lot more than we were. What they did was you listened to a song with them and then the next single wasn’t nearly the same musically as the previous one, or the third or the fourth.”
For the diversity of their titles, ABBA also take advantage of the fact that the group consisted of four singers. Having multiple vocals helps a lot of bands. “You’ve got John Lennon and Paul McCartney, or you’ve got Fleetwood Mac, you’ve got the Eagles: it’s great to have two singers because it makes a difference between the tracks too,” Andersson explained. The pianist became aware of ABBA’s potential with their single “Mamma Mia”: “That’s when we realized that this is something special, now we’re finding out exactly what we can achieve with a song if we work hard enough on it.”
