The scented spiny crust fungus is originally from Australia and South America, but has also been spotted several times in the Netherlands since 2019. “Traces are so microscopic,” says Leonard. “They blow over by the wind, but are also spread by people and animals.”

The fact that Leonard finds this exceptional fungus in this forest is extra special. “We planted trees at primary school. Look what it has become now,” he says proudly. “It’s nice to see that this forest is getting older. In terms of mushrooms, it is of course also yielding more and more.”

Leonard’s most special find was the amethyst club fungus. “That is one of the most beautiful ones you can find. It is bright purple; a kind of coral. Seen once and never again.” Still, he assumes he will encounter the purple club one day. “I think so. We remain hopeful.”
