WeWorld and Mammadimerda: «We reiterate once again: school is not a polling station»

TO just over a month after returning from the winter holidays, schools close their doors to make way for polling stations. On 12 and 13 February there are regional elections in Lombardy and Lazio and once again there is no attempt to find an alternative venue. Possible? A proposal comes from the countryside WeWorld And Shitmommy “School is not just a polling station.”

The poster of the WeWorld and Mammadimerda campaign School is not just a polling station.

WeWorldwhich for 50 years has been defending the rights of women, girls and boys in Italy and in 27 countries around the world, together with the two bloggers of Mammadimerda, Sarah Malnerich and Francesca Fiore, relaunches the campaign for the occasion #schoolNOseggio to reiterate that an alternative is possible, and that citizens have all the tools to make themselves heard. Through a petition (info on the website of your Municipality) you can in fact ask to change all the seats in a polling station. You can start from your own school, proposing another location that meets the requirements of accessibility and inclusiveness. It’s a battle that we can all carry on together, and if you don’t succeed on the first attempt, you can insist, the results will come. Active participation can be the basis for real change.

The request to vote in venues other than schools is accompanied by that of a revision of the calendar, as the WeWorld report explains The school doesn’t go on vacationwith a preface by Sarah Malnerich and Francesca Fiore. The basic idea is that we need to rethink all teaching, in favor of a more modern, engaging one, and that in this context the calendar must also be remodeled so that it better responds to the needs of children and families. The three months of summer holidays – the longest in Europe – are too much for everyone.

“The calendar should be rethought for better teaching that protects families and the rights of women, on whose shoulders most of the care work falls”, says Marco Chiesara, president of WeWorld. «Let us be heard», is the appeal of the two bloggers, «Local and national governments should understand that education is a priorityand today there are too many things that don’t work».
