West Ham are likely to contact Ajax over Edson Álvarez – favorite to replace Rice

After withdrawing from BVB

West Ham United captain Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal is imminent. In order to replace the defensive midfielder, Edson Álvarez is apparently moving more into the focus of the “Hammers”, which was already a loose topic a few weeks ago. How “The Athleticreported, the east Londoners have been in touch with Ajax Amsterdam to express their interest in signing the Mexican. A move to Borussia Dortmund fell through, and the 25-year-old should continue to be a topic at Bayern.

Word is that West Ham have yet to make an offer to the Dutch record champions but are expected to follow suit. Ajax, with technical director Sven Mislintat, are aiming for a transfer fee of around £35m-40m, which would put Álvarez in the fifth-most expensive exit in the Amsterdam club’s history. In West Ham’s ranking of record arrivals, however, he could rank second. Should the sum exceed 45 million euros, he would become the most expensive Mexican. A transfer from Rice should flush the “Hammers” 122.7 million euros including bonuses into the coffers.

Álvarez, who has a contract with Ajax until 2025, was already under discussion in the Premier League last summer when Chelsea Amsterdam are said to have offered over 50 million euros. However, a move fell through as Ajax didn’t have enough time to find a replacement. The midfielder came to Amsterdam from his home country of CF América in 2019 for 15 million euros. While his market value was EUR 7.5 million at the time, it is now at his personal best of EUR 35 million, which puts him among the top 5 most valuable professionals in the Eredivisie.
