Wervershoof is preparing for honoring ‘queen’ Schouten

Triple Olympic champion Irene Schouten can count on an exuberant welcome in Wervershoof when she returns to the Netherlands. The skater will be given a tour through the village of North Holland and a tribute on the steps of the town hall and in sports center De Dars, regional channel NH Nieuws reports.

Schouten was crowned the queen of the Winter Games in Beijing with three gold and a bronze medal. She won the 3000m, 5000m, mass start and third in the team pursuit. She is the most successful Dutch Olympian at one Olympics.

Schouten will not look for the crowds and will not hand out autographs or take a picture with her fellow residents, NH Nieuws reports. The skater is still participating in the World Allround Championships at the beginning of March and cannot afford a corona infection.
