Werder extends expiring contract with Jung: Has “absolutely met” expectations

Set since summer 2021

Werder Bremen has planning security on the left defensive side for the time being. Anthony Jung has extended his contract with the Green-Whites, which expired at the end of the season. As usual, the club did not specify the new term. “Tony has been a constant with us from the start. He absolutely lived up to expectations on and off the pitch and we’re glad he’s staying with us. He’s a regular and has established himself on the left side. He has become an important part of our team,” said Clemens Fritz.

Those responsible had regularly provided information about efforts to extend the contract during the season, but an agreement dragged on. Lee Buchanan (21) is to be developed at Werder in the long term, but the Englishman does not seem ready for the regular place yet. Fritz did not rule out another commitment in the summer, since Jung can also be used in the center of defence.

Born in Spain, he joined Werder on a free transfer from Bröndby IF in the summer of 2021 and established himself in the lower house on the left. He has made 23 appearances this season (two goals, two assists). “It has been an exciting and successful time in Bremen since moving from Denmark. We have a good team in which everything is absolutely right. My family and I also feel very comfortable in the city, so I’m happy to still be part of Werder Bremen,” added Jung.
