Top scorer & Buchanan sit out
Werder Bremen will have to do without Romano Schmid (22) for the time being. The midfielder suffered a knee ligament injury in training on Friday, the Bundesliga club announced on Saturday. Schmid is to be examined more closely on Monday in Bremen after returning from the training camp in Murcia, Spain.
In the final friendly on Sunday (3.30 p.m.) against the Swiss first division side FC St. Gallen, left-back Lee Buchanan (21) will also be absent due to calf problems. A use of Niclas Füllkrug is still uncertain. The striker sat out training on Saturday due to a flu infection.
Werder Bremen’s filling pitcher is not looking for a change – both sides have to agree
Meanwhile, national striker Füllkrug is not pushing for a change. “I am totally happy at Werder and I know what I have at Werder and that I still have the opportunity to develop further here. I really enjoy fulfilling my role in this team,” said the World Cup participant in an interview with “dyke room“.
Nevertheless, Füllkrug, with ten goals so far the top German goalscorer in the Bundesliga and a big gain in market value since the beginning of the season, does not completely rule out a departure this winter. “If there is an offer, we will talk about it and see which of the sides is interested in it. For both? Then you can talk about it. For one side or even both sides? Then it won’t be talked about,” said Füllkrug. “I’ve been at Werder for three and a half years now, and anyone who knows me knows what it means to me to play for this club.”
With a top offer, Werder could be forced to think about a sale for financial reasons. A constellation in which you have to talk is currently “not available”, said Füllkrug at “sky“.

Füllkrug was one of the few winners at the World Cup in Qatar, which from Germany’s perspective was so disappointing. The forward scored against both Spain and Costa Rica but his two goals failed to prevent elimination in the preliminary round. About his future in the DFB team he said: “The national coach communicates very clearly and openly. We had a lot of good conversations before, during and after the tournament, even if I don’t want to say what it was about in detail. It is clear that I will step on the gas to continue to be there.”
