Grüll has ten goals and six assists for the “Hütteldorfer” this season; his contract expires in the summer of 2024. Werder is therefore looking at a free transfer, but could also strike in the winter. According to the report, Rapid does not want to lose the four-time national player for free and would agree to a sale six months earlier.

A transfer fee shouldn’t be too high for the cash-strapped Bremen team, who haven’t been very willing to spend in January in recent years. The last permanent winter newcomer came in 2019 in the person of Romano Schmid, also from Austria. In the following years, there were a maximum of loan deals such as those of Davie Selke and Kevin Vogt in 2020 (each with a loan fee) or Maximilian Philipp in 2023.

Grüll himself revealed his ambitions in an interview with Transfermarkt in May of this year: “I still dream of making the step into a top 5 league,” he said at the time, looking ahead to the summer. Around half a year later, this opportunity seems to have arisen; in addition to Bremen, FSV Mainz 05’s interest was also recently reported.
