Werder Bremen takes a point at VfL Wolfsburg

Solid Bundesliga comeback for Werder Bremen: One year after being relegated, the Hanseatic League have made a respectable comeback. Coach Ole Werner’s team earned a well-deserved 2-2 (2-1) draw at VfL Wolfsburg in the northern duel, spoiling Wolves coach Niko Kovac’s victorious return to the league.

A double strike within 120 seconds documented the strong performance of the guests. First, Niclas Füllkrug scored with a low shot (21′), Leonardo Bittencourt (23′) was successful with a header. Lukas Nmecha put the Lower Saxony in the lead with a remarkable lob (11th). Josuha Guilavogui equalized late (84′).

The agile guests not only put away the early deficit well, they increasingly took over the initiative in the first half after their two goals. The 28,015 spectators in the Volkswagen Arena were amazed at the bold newcomer, who seemed quicker and quicker than the Wolfsburg team, who were rather sluggish at this stage.

Kovac had to take corrective action at ever shorter intervals, and his team was clearly inferior when it came to winning the ball. Colleague Werner, on the other hand, mostly watched the hustle and bustle of his protégés in a relaxed manner.

VfL Wolfsburg: Max Kruse annoys Werder Bremen

Kovac reacted to the two clear defensive errors in the goals conceded at half-time and replaced newcomer Mattias Svanberg from Sweden with veteran Guilavogui. The ex-captain, who was last loaned to his native France, is actually on the sales list in Wolfsburg.

The hosts now acted more controlled on the defensive, but there were still problems in the forward movement. From the 56th minute, Danish national player Jonas Wind was supposed to provide more of a goal threat. But this change did not result in more than two half-chances. After all, Max Kruse, who came on shortly before the end, was involved in the equalization.

Before the game there had been problems between Werder supporters and the Wolfsburg police. Some ultra groups then decided to return to Bremen early.

“SV Werder and condemns the measures taken,” SV Werder tweeted. Allegedly, Werder fans were held and would not have had the opportunity to move freely.
