Werder Bremen provides insight into winter transfer plans

Bundesliga soccer club Werder Bremen has given an insight into their winter transfer plans that not all fans will like. At the same time, it was revealed in which position the Green-Whites were most likely to improve.

After initial difficulties, Werder Bremen has regained its footing in the Bundesliga in recent weeks, but the gap to the relegation zone is still small, a small phase of weakness and the Hanseatic League is once again deep in the vortex. One reason for the newcomers’ difficulties last season was the thin squad, which already had a number of absences due to injuries. So will Werder upgrade in the winter?

According to information from “Bild”, there was a summit last week among those responsible for sport around coach Ole Werner, sports director Frank Baumann and licensed player boss Clemens Fritz. The tenor: Not much will (or can) happen. Before the Bremen team even takes action, further discussions with the transfer committee should follow.

After all: professional boss Fritz revealed a little about how far the Green-Whites have come in their thinking so far. “It won’t be a winter in which we make four or five transfers,” Fritz made clear to “Bild” and added: “We are currently monitoring the market and providing updates.”

Whether Werder actually takes on a player depends “on developments in the next few weeks and on the financial circumstances,” continued the 42-year-old, who is seen as a possible successor to managing director Baumann.

Werder Bremen could make adjustments here

Not surprisingly, Werder fans should expect a rather quiet January despite the sporting concerns. According to the tabloid, mega offers for a Bremen player are unlikely, even if, for example, striker Marvin Ducksch is currently (continuing to) attract attention and is even being traded within the DFB team.

The impending loss of Naby Keïta, who (if successful with Guinea) could be at the Africa Cup from January to mid-February, does little to change Werder’s transfer reluctance. Although they are “keeping an eye on it,” confirmed Fritz, they apparently want to accommodate Keïta’s absence internally.

In addition, those players who are considered sales candidates, such as Nicolai Rapp, who is explicitly named in the report, are making no move to leave the Weser club in the near future. Rapp would be one of those players who operate in midfield like Keïta.

If, unexpectedly, larger gaps arise in the headquarters, a new six or eight would be the most likely position that Werder would upgrade to in the winter, according to “Bild”.
