Milos Veljkovic (26) will stay with SV Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga. After the promotion, the green-whites extended the expiring contract of the central defender with an undisclosed term. “Here he has developed into a seasoned professional,” commented professional manager Clemens Fritz on the decision of the Serb, who has been active on the Weser for six years, five of them as a first division player.
Head coach Ole Werner added: “Milos was a constant in our promotion team. He is tactically very variable, has experience and takes responsibility on and off the field.” Veljkovic himself emphasized: “After promotion to the Bundesliga, it was clear to me that Bremen would be my first point of contact.”
In the past season, Veljkovic, who came to Bremen from Tottenham’s reserve in 2016, made 26 appearances in the second division. In total, he now has 171 competitive games in the first team for Werder. The decision to extend the contract with the Swiss-born followed a few days after captain Ömer Toprak (32) turned down the offer, which was heavily based on performance to extend his working papers. In addition to the newcomers Amos Pieper (Arminia Bielefeld) and Niklas Stark (Hertha BSC), Veljkovic completes the center of defense in the Hanseatic city (to the SVW squad for the coming season).
