Werder Bremen: Coach Ole Werner stays and calls for “fresh blood”

Important decisions

After staying in the league from Werder Bremen, Ole Werner is preparing for a demanding second Bundesliga season under his direction. “Each point will be hard earned for us next year. We won’t fly through the league next year without working very exceptionally,” said the coach after the 1-1 (0-1) draw against 1. FC Köln on the penultimate matchday.

After the hard-fought draw on Saturday, Werner was visibly relieved. Due to the relegation, the expiring contract of the Werder coach was automatically extended by clause until 2024. “It’s true that staying up in the league will continue,” confirmed Werner, who the Bremen team would also like to retain for the long term. At the end of the season, the Hanseatic League will play at 1. FC Union Berlin next Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky).

For the weeks that followed, however, Werner also agreed to important decisions. “In the summer it’s about doing a very, very good job again with the decisions we make”, also with the way “how we as a team prepare for the new season”. “It will always be the case in this business that you have to be very, very close to 100 percent. Even more so if your wallet doesn’t forgive you too many mistakes,” said Werner, referring to Bremen’s limited financial resources.

The Werder coach had recently lamented the lack of width in his squad. “There’s a certain amount of money there and if you want more players you have to pay some less. Only then you might not get the quality. That’s always an estimate,” says Werner. This has worked well in the past two years, but he still emphasized: “We need fresh blood, we need changes in the roles of individual players and we may also need changes in individual positions where a fresh breeze is good for us. It’s about being able to set up a few things more flexibly.”
