Horst Steffen achieved his big goal at the age of 56: At the start of the training of Werder Bremen, the long -time coach of SV Elversberg led a team from the Bundesliga for the first time. “The first training at a new club is of course special,” said Steffen. “But I’m not excited because I already know that.”
The new coach in Bremen is still largely working with the players of his predecessor Ole Werner, who is now coaching Bundesliga competitor RB Leipzig. The planned renovation of the Werder team is slowly progressing. When asked when he preferred to put the squad together, Steffen replied at a press conference after the training session with a wink: “Yesterday.” He added more seriously: “I think every trainer wishes to put together the squad as early as possible. But we also know that it rarely succeeds.”
With defender Maximilian Wöber (27, Leeds United), only a new addition was on the pitch in the event of constant rain and wet and cold cold. At least for the time being, at least for the time being, Olivier Deman (25, Royal Antwerp), Dawid Kownacki (28, Fortuna Düsseldorf), Dikeni Salifou (22, Austria Klagenfurt) and Isak Hansen-Aarøen (20, Aalborg BK) returned. Until the first Bundesliga game on August 23 or 24 at Eintracht Frankfurt, Werder is still looking for reinforcements for midfield and the attack.
Werder Bremen openly advertises Wanner and Asllani
There are “one or two candidates who could still add,” revealed Steffen. “In the front area we think about whether something is still happening. And it is clear that something may happen on the right.” However, there is also a “good trunk” in the team. “Basically, we are set up in such a way that we can work properly by then.”
Some former Elversberger protégés are now associated with Werder, the focus is on Paul Wanner (19) from FC Bayern and Fisnik Asllani (22) from TSG Hoffenheim. “These are boys with whom I have worked well, who are very interesting,” admitted Steffen openly. “Dealing with both players was such that they performed quite well and enjoyed it. That’s why it doesn’t take as much persuasion.” Nevertheless, there are “other candidates that we discuss.”

Unlike predecessor Werner, Steffen wants to act with a chain of four on the defensive. In which formation exactly Werder will appear in the future, “we will see that”, the new trainer left open. First of all, enough impressions should be collected. This also applies to the goal. Michael Zetterer (29) “deserved his role,” said Steffen, but Mio Backhaus (21) was “also a great candidate, a great talent”. “We take the time to evaluate it.”

Until it is clear, “what happens on the market”, Steffen will take a close look at the current squad. Everyone has the chance to recommend themselves. “It will take a few more days for us to say which players it is enough in terms of performance and which one is not,” said Steffen, who also emphasized: “But these decisions will be made in the near future.” Some players would certainly leave the club. “But that also depends on the market and who will perhaps strengthen us.”

With the discussion about Werder Bremen
Long here!
The squad planning could be mixed up again by Steffen. “The change of coach is an important factor. It may well be that players who had previously had a subordinate role are now seeing a new chance,” outlined license manager Peter Niemeyer. “I am convinced that something will happen – on both sides. The situation has also changed a bit through the new coach.” But of course you are “active on the market”, keep “the whole thing in view” and check, “where there are options. Even depending on what happens within our squad.”
First of all, it is said for Steffen: Wait and evaluate. “What opportunities we have to maybe still make transfers ourselves is always dependent on what we can get,” he said. Waiting is also not a problem. “I have often experienced last-minute transfers that worked very well-despite a little familiarization period,” says Steffen, who is optimistic: “If not many players from the current tribe leave the club, I am confident that we have a good team.”
Ducksch injures himself with Werder Bremen for the first time
There was also bad news for Steffen on Monday: Striker Marvin Ducksch (31) suffered an injury at the start of training from Werder and left the place prematurely. “It cleaned up in the calf. It’s not nice, that’s not pleasant. But we have to wait for the exact diagnosis,” said the new Bremen coach, who added the first unit: “I also enjoyed regional league with Elversberg. And also enjoyed Landesliga with Kapellen-Erft. I was very happy to do my work. Nevertheless, it was the situation in which I was now in Bundesliga trainer.”
