Germany’s ski jumpers are traveling to the World Cup in Sapporo, Japan, with Karl Geiger but without Andreas Wellinger, Pius Paschke and Felix Hoffmann.

The DSV announced this squad decision on Thursday. “At the World Cup in Japan we will start with Karl Geiger, Philipp Raimund, Luca Roth and Ben Bayer. Luca and Ben recently showed good performances in the Continental Cup with first and second place and therefore have the opportunity to compete for World Cup points again this season,” said national coach Stefan Horngacher.

He added: “Andreas Wellinger and Pius Paschke will take a break from competition and instead prepare for the Ski Flying World Championships in a training camp. Felix Hoffmann, who has started strength training again, will also complete a few training jumps.”

Raimund, who was recently plagued by an infection, said: “I’ve recovered so well over the last few days. There have been days where I felt completely fine again, and so I started training again. That’s why I’m now in good spirits for Japan. There’s still a bit of time before the competitions finally start. So I’m assuming that I’ll be in full swing over there in order to be able to pick up where I was before my break due to illness stopped.”

Ski jumping: “challenge” for the German women

The German ski jumpers will first compete in Zhangjiakou in China, then they will also go to Sapporo.

“In the next 13 days we will be taking part in six competitions at three locations in two countries – that means a lot of traveling and little time to think. On the one hand that is good, but on the other hand it is a challenge because we have little regeneration time and a very tight program,” said national coach Heinz Kuttin.
