Overtaking to the limit, technical unforeseen events to the detriment of the leading cars, forced pit stops a few laps from the end, and a scenario that was never predictable until the very last laps of the 6 Hours of Monza. On the 5.793 kilometers of the Temple of Speed, the fourth round of the WEC 2022 World Endurance Championship crowns the Alpine of Negrao-Lapierre-Vaxiviere, ahead of the Toyota GR010 Hybrid of Buemi-Hartley-Hirakawa. At the end of the race, on Sunday 10 July under a hot summer sun, Milner-Tandy’s Chevrolet Corvette prevails in the Gte Pro class in front of the two AF Corse Ferrari 488s, forced to refuel in the final stages. In the other categories, among the Lmp2 prototypes, the Oreca 07 – Gibson of Realteam by Wrt wins; in Lmgte Am celebrates the Porsche of the Dempsey Proton team, second the Ferrari of the female Iron Dames crew. At their absolute debut in the “queen” class, the two Peugeot 9X8 hybrid Hypercars suffer some technical problems, but they grind useful kilometers for the season finale: the first car of the French team finishes 33rd overall.

6 HOURS OF MONZA: THE RACE, THE START

Without particular contacts the start of the tender. The Hypercars maintain their positions on the starting grid with the Glickenhaus 007 number 708, driven by Romain Dumas, who immediately digs a furrow gaining a 7-second lead in the first 6 laps. In the Lmgte Pro class, the Ferrari 488 number 51 of Alessandro Pier Guidi defends the first position, with the other red of the AF Corse team, the number 52 with Antonio Fuoco in the first stint, which during the first lap gains a position against the Nick Tandy’s # 64 Chevrolet Corvette, climbing third. In the first two hours of the race, the American team’s Hypercar maintains the leadership, while the brawl is on in Lmp2 for the top positions, with the Prema Orlen team – Kubica, Deletraz, Colombo – remaining on the top floors (it will finish sixth in class ).

6 HOURS OF MONZA: THE ASTON MARTIN ACCIDENT

The incident occurred at the Aston Martin Vantage number 33 (Lmgte Am) of the Portuguese Henrique Chaves when the checkered flag left 3 hours and 24 minutes. The TF Sport team driver arrives at too high a speed – perhaps due to a brake problem – at the Second Variant, his Aston touches the curb and “takes off”, overturning and stopping the race against the protective barriers. So much fear, but fortunately no consequences for the pilot, that he leaves the cockpit with his own legs and goes to the medical center for the usual checks. The race resumes after the yellow flags with Glickenhaus retaining the first position, ahead of Toyota number 7 and Alpine. Among the Lmp2 the Realteam by Wrt prototype leads ahead of that of the Italian team Prema Orlen. The two Ferrari 488s lead in Lmgte Pro with numbers 51 and 52. In Lmgte Am first the car of Maranello of the female Iron Dames crew (Rahel Frey-Michelle Gatting-Sarah Bovy).

6 HOURS OF MONZA: THE RACE, THE GLICKENHAUS RETREAT

After the yellow flag for the Aston accident, the distances shorten and the race “restarts” with a canvas to be written. The Glickenhaus up to that moment in the lead returned to the pits and found itself fourth, 30 seconds behind the leader, the number 7 Toyota with Conway at the wheel. Twist 2 hours and 30 minutes from the end: engine problems (turbo failure) for the Glickenhaus, forced to leave a race that until then had seen the crew of Pla-Dumas-Derani play a leading role , starting from pole position on the grid. The two Toyotas with the third Alpine benefit from this, starting to take off to establish the positions on the podium. Two hours from the end – with Alpine keeping their heads for many laps – contact in the First Variant between two of the leading Lmp2 prototypes, that of the Prema team and that of the Richard Mille team, with the crews losing seconds but continuing the race.

6 HOURS OF MONZA: THE RACE, 2 HOURS FROM THE END

When the 6 Hours of Monza enters the “hottest” phase, one hour and 30 minutes from the end, Alpine maintains the lead just over 2 seconds behind the Toyota number 8, ahead of the other “twin” car, but in the During the following laps the two Japanese Hypercars are brought forward, with a challenge that is confirmed on the thread of seconds. In the Lmgte Pro class, the Ferrari 488 number 51, the undisputed leader up to that moment – ahead of the number 52, the Corvette third – was forced to stop for 5 seconds due to a technical violation. After serving the penalty, Pier Guidi is fourth on his return, behind Kevin Estre’s Porsche 911 number 92, which at that point is virtually on the podium. Meanwhile, in the Lmgte Am class, Ferrari number 85 of the Iron Dames continues to dictate the pace. Dinner shot 1 hour and 12 minutes from the end: contact between Toyota number 7 (Kobayashi at the wheel), at full speed on the main straight, while trying to complete the overtaking on Vaxiviere’s Alpine. In the excited phase with the two pilots launched, the French car touches the right rear wheel of the Japanese hypercar with the front left deflector. The latter suffers a puncture – and repairable damage to the rear – and is forced to pit stop, saying goodbye to dreams of victory, also due to the fact that the race direction gives a 90-second penalty to the Japanese for causing the contact. Race frozen for a few laps with Full Course Yellow regime, with the Alpine ahead of everyone.

6 HOURS OF MONZA: THE RACE, THE FINAL

In the final, 40 minutes from the end, a Jota team Lmp2 off-piste causes a new yellow flag regime and therefore allows the crews to regroup. Alpine is first followed by the two Toyotas. In Lmgte Pro the Ferrari of Fuoco leads ahead of the Corvette, third the Porsche of Estre, with Pier Guidi in the Ferrari number 51 who can return in the “wake” of the French. An incandescent final for the positions on the podium, with Pier Guidi and Estre fighting on the edge of the seconds: the driver from Tortona, reigning world champion, conquers the third position 25 minutes from the end and consolidates the position with a higher pace. Twist of the scene two minutes from the end when both Lmgte Pro class Ferraris are forced to a quick return for a refueling: the Corvette benefits from this and takes an unexpected victory up to a few kilometers from the checkered flag. .
