The top car teams would have gladly done without it 48 Hour Chrono for the risks inherent in a special stage of almost a thousand kilometers to be covered over two days without assistance. Twists and turns were expected, but no one expected it to happen to Carlos Sainz. His accident characterized the first part of stage 2 with the Spaniard’s Ford Raptor overturning at km 327 in a very treacherous stretch. The crew escaped unharmed, while the car was damaged. The Spaniard lost about half an hour before managing to restart thanks also to the help of his teammate. The Sainz-Cruz duo still managed to advance and reach bivouac E, the penultimate one, where they spent the night with the other top drivers. Lucas Cruz, the historic navigator of Sainz sr. he tells us how the accident happened: “There was a lot of dust. We opened the track for several kilometres, we were then overtaken, we recovered positions, overtaking, until we arrived in a very complicated area with small dunes and dunes. We were going at a good speed, but we hit a “broken dune” and overturned. So we had to wait for Mitch to arrive.”
