The Drents Overijsselse Delta (Wdodelta) Water Board starts today with work in the area around the Domeinweg near Fluitenberg, just above Hoogeveen. The ditches and weteringen are decorated differently to make the area more resistant to both drought and flooding.
Water storage is being constructed along the A28 and at the intersection of the Domeinweg and Fluitenbergseweg. These are places where rainwater is collected and the soil can withdraw, so that flooding is prevented or limited and at the same time there is a water supply in the ground when it becomes dry.
The flow is also improved, weirs are automated and extra weirs are placed to be able to control the supply and removal of water more accurately. Low -lying plots are raised and so -called maintenance paths are restored, so that the water board can better maintain the waterways.
According to daily board member Nicole Koks, the adjustment is necessary because of the increasing weather differences: “Drought and peak showers will become more normal in the weather. That is why it is important to be able to hold water more and longer in times of drought and water if there is a lot of rain at the same time.”
The work is expected to last until the summer of 2026. Residents, the municipalities of Hoogeveen and De Wolden, LTO Noord, the province and the Drents Landschap thought about the plans.
