Biden made a surprise visit to Kiev today. During that visit, he also promised further sanctions against Russia. Together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Biden commemorated the Ukrainian war victims.
The visit of the US president, just days before the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is especially important symbolically. It was Biden’s first visit since the start of that invasion, and was kept strictly secret until the last minute because of the high security risks. The Russians were informed several hours in advance.
After Kiev, Biden traveled on to Poland, where he will meet President Andrzej Duda, among others.
