Want to change? US coach strengthens reservist Gio Reyna

Gio Reyna is more and more dissatisfied at Borussia Dortmund. The American is now thinking about saying goodbye to BVB. His national coach supports him in this.

US national coach Gregg Berhalter understands Giovanni Reyna’s desire to change. “I think that every ambitious professional wants to be on the pitch. And this is a case in which Gio doesn’t get the playing time he wants and may be looking for alternatives. That’s completely understandable,” said Berhalter before a friendly USA vs. Slovenia, which takes place on Saturday in San Antonio.

This is a “common reaction” among USA national players, said Berhalter: “We support him in his efforts to be on the pitch regularly and look forward to the result.”

BVB coach Terzic explains Reyna’s existence as a reserve

The 21-year-old Reyna only played nine times for BVB in the Bundesliga this season. Reyna was substituted on eight times. However, the highly gifted offensive player had repeatedly been sidelined with injuries in the past. The 24-time national player (seven goals) was unable to complete the summer preparation and only celebrated his comeback in October.

BVB head coach Edin Terzic recently explained at a press conference why the 21-year-old is usually only a substitute: “Gio didn’t have an easy first half of the season, was injured for a long time and started the season late. His fitness level has improved significantly. Such good values “We’ve never had anything like this in winter before. His abilities are well known.”

As “ESPN” recently reported, Reyna wants to leave Borussia this winter. He has already been offered to several clubs in Europe, including AS Monaco, Real Sociedad, Sevilla FC and SL Benfica.

He still has a contract with Borussia Dortmund that runs until the summer of 2025.
