For Volkskrant Magazine, Overweel was commissioned to create illustrations for the theme Feminism and male sexuality. He made a drawing in which a man is attacked by a huge dildo.
Giant dildo in the newspaper after all
“The writer of the article thought the dildo went too far, but in the end the newspaper published it anyway,” said the cartoonist. “I like that so much that they put my giant dildo in the newspaper.”
Overweel preferred to work with loud music in his studio and then sing along loudly. But he was also a craftsman of the old school. No illustrations on the computer. He drew and painted with pencil and paint, old-fashioned on paper.
“If I make a mistake, I just paint over it,” he said. “An advantage is that at the end I have an original work. With the computer you can only make a printout.”
