The English national team has reached the semifinals of the World Cup with a strong performance against Norway.
The dream of a first title since 1966 is alive: thanks to Jude Bellingham’s brace, England has advanced to the semifinals in a thrilling match, simultaneously ending Norway’s remarkable journey.
Under Thomas Tuchel’s management, the team defeated one of the tournament’s surprise packages 2-1 (after extra time) in Miami. They will now face either the reigning champions Argentina or Switzerland in Atlanta.
To end their 60-year title drought, the English must elevate their performance. Norway, featuring star striker Erling Haaland, provided tough opposition and even took the lead through Andreas Schjelderup in the 36th minute.
Bellingham Rewards England’s Efforts
However, the standout player Bellingham (scoring in the 45+2 and 93 minutes) turned the match around under extremely challenging conditions of heat and humidity. Long before the final whistle blew, England fans were singing the Beatles classic “Hey Jude.”
Tuchel had set his sights on the title weeks ago, emphasizing the importance of thinking big and discussing their aspirations. His squad had gained confidence after eliminating co-host Mexico in the Round of 16 in Mexico City.
However, in Miami, England struggled initially after a moment of silence for the late South African World Cup participant Jayden Adams. Norway defended deep, transitioned smoothly, and denied Harry Kane and his teammates any space. The English combinations were sluggish, possibly due to the sweltering 38-degree weather.
Keeper Nyland’s Blunder Seals Norway’s Exit
The first genuine English chance didn’t arrive until the 19th minute when Bellingham mistimed a cross. Shortly after, Kane (29) sent a promising free-kick soaring over the goal.
Yet, it was England’s own error that let their hesitant opponents back into the game: John Stones almost lost possession in his own box, granting Haaland a significant opportunity (33). Haaland (35) later headed over, and Schjelderup scored with an impressive shot into the top corner. England protested a perceived foul on Kane in the build-up.
Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon celebrated joyously alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. However, the supposed missed chance for Alexander Sörloth (39) proved costly: Bellingham equalized with a brilliant solo effort. The Norwegians protested again, claiming the ball had touched a camera mount moments earlier, but FIFA ruled otherwise. Kane scored again, but was caught offside from Bellingham’s clever pass.
Norway controlled much of the second half, earning several corners and rejoicing over a goal. However, Haaland had controversially fouled before Torbjörn Lysaker Heggem’s (55) strike, leading referee Clément Turpin to rule it out after video review.
As Norway pressed, Kristoffer Ajer (76) hit the bar. Meanwhile, England failed to register a shot in the second half, narrowly escaping into extra time. There, Bellingham seized on a blunder from keeper Nyland, scoring decisively. Shortly after, a potential penalty for England was rescinded after review. With Haaland exhausted and unable to help his team, Norway fought bravely but ultimately fell short.
