Madonna is approaching the first day of death of her younger brother Christopher Ciccone, who died last October at the age of 63. The relationship between the two was often difficult. ZThey hardly spoke to each other in a way. In her first podcast appearance, on Purpose with Jay Shetty, Madonna describes a spiritual encounter during her artificial coma (four days in the intensive care unit in June 2023 because of a severe bacterial infection), which she brought to reconcile with Ciccone.
Unpublished songs about forgiveness
“I was almost on the other side and had a conscious moment when my mother appeared and asked me: ‘Do you want to come with me?’ And I said: ‘No’, ”said Madonna. “My assistant was in the room, I was still unconscious, but he heard ‘no’ say. When I finally woke up, I understood that this ‘no’ meant that I had to forgive and reconcile myself with people I still resented.”
Shortly afterwards, Madonna wrote a song about her brother and another about forgiveness. The unpublished pieces “Fragile” and “Forgive Yourself” revolve around responsibility and self -reflection. “We have to forgive others, but also ourselves. We must not flag forever for decisions that did not work – neither for ourselves nor for others,” she said.
For a while she delayed forgiveness towards Ciccone because she thought it would still have enough time. “Your ego dances around it, as in the way: ‘Yes, yes, yes, I call him at some point, speak to him, am his friend again, help him.’ But at some point I did it.
Finally reconciliation with the brother
She continued: “I didn’t speak to my brother for years. It was his illness and his cry for help that reached me. I had this moment: ‘Will I help my enemy?’ This is how it felt.
