Virkus: There was “no quarrel” with Farke – “A few ideas” in Gladbach’s search for a striker

Neuhaus & Elvedi are to extend

The commitment of Gerardo Seoane should ensure more continuity in the position of head coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach. After a brief collaboration with Adi Hütter and Daniel Farke, who each only stayed for one season, Roland Virkus longs for more consistency: “Continuity is an important key to success. That must be the goal for the future, because continuity creates security and ultimately brings success,” said the sporting director of the “kicker”.

Virkus sees Seoane, who signed on Tuesday and has a three-year contract, as the ideal solution: “Borussia should stand for technically good football, for playing strength, for good footballers. And Seoane fits that path. His football is structured, organized, but also variable.”

Regarding speculation about an inharmonious separation from Seoane predecessor Farke, Virkus said: “There was no quarrel with the coach. From my point of view, we reached a reasonable understanding in the end and said together: Let’s do something new. And now we’re looking ahead, not backwards.”

Gladbach’s Virkus: Greatest need for action in defense

Virkus sees the greatest need for action in the search for greater sporting clout in defense: “We have to work on compactness and defensive stability. That was a problem last season, and we’re hoping for the necessary progress under Seoane.” The “foals” conceded 55 goals last season with 52 of their own.

Another construction site is the attack. With Marcus Thuram, the most valuable player in the squad with a market value of 32 million euros and at the same time the only center forward is leaving the club on a free transfer. So far, the 19-year-old talent Grant-Leon Ranos has been signed by FC Bayern Munich II. But it shouldn’t stay that way. “We have a few ideas,” Virkus explained, without going into names.

The talks with Arminia Bielefeld’s left winger Robin Hack are said to be well advanced. Virkus did not want to comment on the name. According to reports, the 24-year-old should be able to switch to the third division free of charge after East Westphalia were relegated. On the other hand, Manu Koné, whose contract ends in 2025, could be sold. The 22-year-old central midfielder is estimated at 30 million euros. “Our attitude is well known: If there are sums involved that a club like Borussia have to think about, we will do that,” emphasized Virkus.

Talks about an extension are in progress with Florian Neuhaus and Nico Elvedi – two of nine “foal” professionals with working papers ending in 2024. “Our goal is for them to choose Borussia with full conviction. If that doesn’t happen, we’ll have to find a solution with a view to the contractual situation.” That means: If no agreement can be reached on further cooperation, changes will come closer so that transfers can still be generated. Further farewells at no cost like those of Thuram or Ramy Bensebaini should be avoided.
