Diogo Jota, the attacker of the English national champion and Portuguese International, died due to a traffic accident in Spain together with his younger brother.

“What a person, what a player, but above all, what an incredible family man,” Van Dijk continues. “You meant so much to all of us and it will always stay that way! That your family has to lose two sons, a husband and a father, is simply unimaginable. So cruel and unfair. My heart breaks for your family, for Rute (the wife of Diogo Jota, ed.) And for your children. I promise that we will always be for your family in these difficult times and then.”

Van Dijk: “A champion forever, number 20 forever. It was a privilege to have stood next to you on the field and to have been outside of it. We will miss you indescribably and will never forget. Your estate will live on, we will take care of that!”, Van Dijk concludes.

Attacker Cody Gakpo posted a photo with Jota on Instagram. “I love you, brother. May your soul rest in peace,” he wrote.

Liverpool reports that back number 20, with which Jota played, is ‘frozen’. That means that nobody at the English champion will still wear the song in the future.
