That suddenly came: Vinzenz Geiger won the overall World Cup of the Nordic combiners. He benefited from a surprising resignation.
Vinzenz Geiger unexpectedly has his first triumph in the overall World Cup. His long -time rival Jarl Magnus Riiber surprisingly preferred to resign and dispenses with the remaining competitions of the season.
The superstar of the scene, who had previously cited the overall ranking, announced his decision on Sunday afternoon at his home race in Oslo shortly before the cross -country skiing. This can only lose the overall victory if Riiber should still revise his decision – but the Norwegian has excluded.
“That came totally unexpectedly. But I’m very happy, although I am also sad,” said Geiger. He emphasized that the two had been rivals for many years and that numerous duels had delivered. “He was usually one step ahead,” continued Geiger.
Riiber himself explained: “It just feels right to close this fantastic chapter here in Oslo and start something new. I couldn’t be happier with the decision.”
Geiger took second place on Sunday at the first World Cup victory of the Finn Ilkka Herola, taking over the yellow jersey of the overall World Cup leader. Already on Saturday he won the first race in Oslo in front of Riiber and retired for the World Cup in Trondheim, where Riiber won both individual races and won bronze twice.
“I’m just terribly tired,” said 27 -year -old Riiber to his sudden resignation. The record world champion had already announced in January for health and family reasons to end his career at the end of the season. For the home World Cup, he had brought himself into top shape again.
On Sunday, the Norwegian Riiber did not get out of place in a strong wind in a strong wind. Instead of relying on a catch -up, he decided on a long round of honor in front of a home crowd. With great applause, he finally ran to the finish at the Holmenkollen, where he had celebrated eight World Cup victories in his career.
Riiber was the first combined to win the overall World Cup for the sixth time. For Geiger, on the other hand, it would be the first overall victory. Previously, Hermann Weinbuch, Ronny Ackermann (3) and Eric Frenzel (5) had won the crystal ball.
