Vingegaard wins Tour de France, final stage for Philipsen | Cycling

Where normally the start of the last stage is calm, this time the ‘big three’ of this lap Wout van Aert, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar attacked as a joke. The trio quickly got a 50 second lead, but then let themselves be caught up just as quickly, after which the traditional walking pace was used.

After two ‘boring’ hours, the attack was launched at the first pass of the line. The groups of escapees did not get much margin, while a good number of speed riders stirred. For a long time there was a group leading the way, including Daniel Martinez, Stefan Bissegger and Jan Tratnik, but they never got more than ten seconds.

When that group was caught, five took off that took a little more lead together. The peloton had a lot of trouble getting them back in, but with seven kilometers from the finish, the time had come. At that time, green jersey carrier Van Aert was still reasonably at the back of the pack.

At that moment Pogacar attacked again. He got Filippo Ganna with him, but the peloton didn’t flinch. After that, Philipsen turned out to be the strongest in the sprint ahead of Dylan Groenewegen and Alexander Kristoff.
