The Week of Drenthe looks back at last week’s news. A week of high temperatures, an arrest for a fatal accident and concerns about the UNESCO World Heritage status.
On Monday the temperature rose to above 30 degrees Celsius, it was the first tropical day of the year. It led to crowds at swimming locations. On Tuesday, participants of the Drentse Fiets4Daagse were allowed to choose whether they wanted to ride. Many cyclists just got on, usually a bit earlier than usual, and braved the heat.
The police announced on Wednesday that two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing a fatal accident on the A28. That accident happened on Friday near Beilen. A truck driver stopped his car on the highway, behind him a van and a motorcycle collided, the motorcyclist was killed.
In Frederiksoord it is feared that major intervention in the agricultural sector will affect the Unesco World Heritage status of the Colonies of Benevolence. Frederiksoord is the first agricultural colony that was founded more than two hundred years ago by Johannes van den Bosch. Characteristics of that agricultural history can still be seen and form one of the criteria for having the status.
Due to the nitrogen crisis, major interventions will be made in the agricultural sector, what that means for Frederiksoord remains to be seen.
The municipality of Hoogeveen and educational umbrella organizations in Hoogeveen did not want to set up a school especially for Ukrainian refugees. Two volunteers from the distribution point for Ukrainians hear from the refugees that there is a real need for such a school. And so they take the initiative for that.
“We are busy with the preparations. The school is called the Bloemenkrans and we would prefer to open after the summer,” says Daniela Bolks, one of the initiators.
