SC Freiburg narrowly wins against Eintracht Frankfurt in the duel between their pursuers in the women’s Bundesliga. The game marks an anniversary for the hosts.

SC Freiburg beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 (0-1) on matchday six of the women’s Bundesliga. Nicole Anyomi (20th minute) and former Freiburg player Erëleta Memeti (71st) scored the goals for the Hessians. Luca Birkholz (60th) and Selina Vobian (77th, 87th, hand penalty) scored for the never-failing sports club to secure a much-celebrated victory. Freiburg remains in third place in the table, the SGE is sixth.

For both teams it was about staying in the field of pursuit of the top teams. SC Freiburg got off to a good start to the season with ten points from five games and fourth place, while the highly rated Frankfurt team (nine points, sixth place) got off to a somewhat bumpy start.

The women have been playing football at SC Freiburg for 50 years

But the game wasn’t just exciting from a sporting point of view – it was also marked by an anniversary: 50 years of women’s football at SC Freiburg. To mark the occasion, there was a fan festival around the stadium, many former companions did the honors and finally the sports club team wore a special jersey on which the names of all SC players from the past 50 years were immortalized.

Nicole Anyomi puts Eintracht Frankfurt in the lead

On the field, Eintracht was the more active team at the beginning. Laura Freigang scored for the guests after an assist from Lisanne Gräwe, but the goal did not count because the national player was offside (14th). A little later, the Frankfurt women were able to celebrate: After strong preparatory work by Géraldine Reuteler, Anyomi scored from around seven meters to make it 1-0 for the SGE (21st).

Maj Schneider hits the right outside post of the Frankfurt goal

Eintracht remained superior in the field afterwards. Rebecka Blomqvist (27th) narrowly missed, and a little later Nina Lührßen hit the crossbar of the Freiburg goal (30th). However, the sports club had a very difficult time on the offensive, and the Breisgau team initially failed to achieve anything more than shots from a distance. Only in the 40th minute did the hosts become dangerous again in the first half: Lisa Kolb beat two Frankfurt players on the right and passed from the penalty area line to Maj Schneider, who, however, only hit the right outside post of the SGE goal from close range. So Eintracht’s narrow but deserved lead remained at the break.

Freiburg had the first opportunity of the second half: the ball came via a detour in the Frankfurt penalty area to Vobian, who had been substituted on at the break. The midfielder placed the ball somewhat hastily from the left corner of the six-yard box to the side netting of the Eintracht goal (49′). There would have been a lot more.

Luca Birkholz scores after strong preparatory work from Selina Vobian

Freiburg was now better in the game and pushed Eintracht onto the defensive. The SC received their reward for this in the 60th minute: after Frankfurt lost the ball, the hosts countered on the right side. Vobian was sent steeply, the substitute put the ball on her left foot and served Birkholz, who was running along, with a perfect cross pass. The striker had no trouble pushing in from five meters to equalize 1-1.

Of all people, Erëleta Memeti scores

Now the match offered an open exchange of blows. Both teams looked for the offensive and the Frankfurt team scored the next goal. After a one-two with Blomqvist, Memeti scored with a well-placed shot from the edge of the penalty area to give the visitors the lead again (71′). Of all people, Memeti – the striker played for the sports club herself from 2020 to 2022.

SC Freiburg strikes back again

But SC Freiburg struck back again. Aurelie Csillag, who had recently been substituted, broke through on the left and penetrated the Frankfurt penalty area. Eintracht was able to stop the winger, but couldn’t get the ball away. The ball came via a detour to Birkholz, who kept track and laid it out to the right for Vobian. The 23-year-old scored from close range to make it 2-2 (78th).

And things got even better for the home team: after a handball by Frankfurt’s central defender Amanda Ilestedt, SC received a penalty. Vobian took responsibility and scored safely from the spot to make it 3-2 for Freiburg (87th). That was also the final score – after the end of the game there was huge cheering in the Dreisamstadion and the anniversary party could begin.

Selina Vobian: “Our victory was deserved”

The match winner for the sports club was Vobian, who came on as a substitute at the break: two goals plus an assist – grade one with an asterisk. “It was a good game for me. I was there straight after being substituted on. We deserved to win,” Vobian told SWR Sport after the match. “Everyone ran for each other to get the game on our side in the second half. We’re getting better and better into the season.”

SC Freiburg is now third with 13 points from six games, Frankfurt is sixth and has nine points. The Breisgau women continue next week in Nuremberg (October 18th, 12:00 p.m.), while the Hessians await SV Werder Bremen (October 19th, 2:00 p.m.).
