No one at VfL Wolfsburg was more happy about the 5-1 (1-0) win against Borussia Mönchengladbach than Lukas Nmecha. After three short comebacks and three serious setbacks during a period of suffering that lasted more than two years, the 26-year-old made a real return to the Bundesliga on Tuesday evening with two goals.
Less than a quarter of an hour after coming on as a substitute, Nmecha scored against Gladbach to make it 4-0 (84th minute) and 5-0 (87th minute). “My family, my physios, the doctors: there are so many people who have helped me. I can’t even get to all the names anymore,” said Dortmund’s older brother Felix Nmecha. “I feel good. I’m fit. The suffering is over. Now I can attack!”
He injured his knee three times and his thigh once: Nmecha has been absent from VfL for almost 600 days since that fateful home game against Borussia Dortmund on November 8, 2022. Only four short appearances last season, seven substitutions since his comeback on November 2, 2024 against FC Augsburg – these are the most recent proof of work for the seven-time national player.
His contract in Wolfsburg expires in five and a half months. With a market value of 4 million euros, he is one of the top 15 most valuable Bundesliga professionals with an expiring contract. He doesn’t have much time to recommend himself for a new contract. But the game against Gladbach was an important step. “He’s back again. There is no question that he has a quality that will help you. That’s why I’m glad I have him,” said coach Ralph Hasenhüttl.
Obligation to purchase apparently applies to top assist provider Amoura
Apparently there is more planning security with top template provider Mohamed Amoura. According to information from “Sky”, the purchase obligation agreed with Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer for the 24-year-old attacker on loan has now taken effect. Accordingly, the Algerian will receive a contract with the Wolves until 2029 and will cost a total of 18 million euros, of which 3 million euros were already due in loan fees. This would make Amoura the fifth most expensive signing in the VfL club’s history.
The center forward has played 17 games for Lower Saxony so far, in which he has scored six goals and provided seven assists. He recently increased his market value from 16 million to 22 million euros, making him the most valuable Wolfsburg resident.
