After the release of coach Dieter Hecking and sports director Dirk Dufner, VfL Bochum is looking for two new leading heads for the sporting area. In the coaching position, the previous young coach David Siebers, who is owned by a UEFA-Pro license, may first try for several weeks. On Tuesday, the CEO Andreas Luthe and Managing Director Ilja Kaenzig commented on the situation.
Until the international break in October, the previous U19 coach of the district club is responsible. The insured board boss Luthe at the press conference, at which Siebers was presented and the separation from Hecking was examined in more detail. So the interim coach stays three games to profile each other.
The fact that Siebers has to give up the scepter afterwards seems anything but safe. The way Luthe spoke to the press representatives of the coaching search – nothing was excluded – made it clear that Siebers himself has the prospect of a longer commitment in the professional team. We are still looking for a trainer and a sports director after Dufner had to take up his hat again after less than half a year. Luthe also indicated: “It is also quite possible that a sports director will come with Ilja Kaenzig as managing director.” Luthe also brought into play a possible adapted role for ex-professional Simon Zoller. “We don’t want us to overload Ilja Kaenzig for a long period of time.”
Siebers doesn’t want to make many changes at VfL Bochum
Interim coach Siebers emphasized that football virtues such as struggle, passion and winning mentality were particularly important to him. He also wanted to speak to every single player and “get a feeling for what is.” However, he will not make many changes. Siebers said: “It’s about a clear structure, clear guardrails. Everyone should know what to do. A flow automatically arises. Then everyone sees what fun in football means.” His approach is “aggressive pressing”. A focus bees should be the training of standards. “We will go into more than the week after.”
Luthe said about the new, born in Herdecke: “David Siebers comes from the region, he knows VfL. We are convinced that he can give the team a face and positive impulse. He will be courageous. Luthe was glad that Siebers wanted to tackle the task and trust him “100 percent”.
Financial aspect of the change of coach: VfL Bochum was prepared
Managing Director Kaenzig said that VfL must now “get continuity” in the coaching question, and added: “We should not line up under the clubs that change the trainer every year.” Financially, however, the obligation of a new coach was fundamentally adjusted.
The functional stated: “It is not meant disrespectful: clubs plan a change of coach. That is part of the prudent planning. (…) We have to stay calm, we have it under control. Of course we cannot continue to spend money on.” The VfL had hardly made any expenses on the transfer market under the responsibility of Dufner after relegation. Almost all of the eleven new additions came on a rental basis or free of charge. In the table, the Bochumers are in 16th place with only three out of 15 possible points. “The descent has sporting and financial consequences,” said Luthe. “Such decisions like now don’t make it easier.”
Praise for Hecking to say goodbye to VfL Bochum
Luthe said about the end of coach Hecking, who has had the VfL team in 30 league games since autumn last year (0.9 points): “The results were under our expectations. We talked intensively about how to proceed and what solutions there are. After that we did not have the impression that we could do it.” You need a positive impulse for the turnaround. The team plays under their possibilities.
Kaenzig praised Hecking alone in having accepted the post in Bochum at all. At that time, the Bochumers were considered almost a safe relegation early in the season. Hecking was able to improve the results, but could no longer prevent the descent; Although VfL would have stood above the line in a table from the 10th matchday – when Hecking took over.
“We were in a pitch -dark situation,” recalled Kaenzig. “Then we found someone who did it and protected himself in front of us. We have experienced and shared values that may no longer be common.” The official said about the separation: “Dieter received it like an old professional. He had a feel that it could happen. It was not a matter of course that he sacrificed himself for VfL.”
