VfB Stuttgart wins the juniors’ DFB Cup: BVB defeated in the final despite a Rijkhoff goal

Title of 2019 defended

The young footballers of VfB Stuttgart have won the DFB Cup for the fourth time and thus defended their title. In the final on Friday evening, the Swabians defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-1 (2-1). Due to the corona pandemic, there had been no winner for two consecutive seasons.

Stuttgart took the lead through Leon Reichardt (24th minute) and Nathan Winkler (28th). BVB scored the goal in front of 3,300 spectators through Julian Rijkhoff (43′), before Thomas Kastanaras made the decision (86’/penalty).

Due to an impending storm, the U19 final in Potsdam was brought forward by an hour at noon. Both teams were not impressed and started concentrated. The slightly favored Dortmund had more of the game, but VfB scored. Reichardt headed in after a corner kick and four minutes later Winkler completed the double strike. Borussia didn’t let themselves be shaken off and shortened the lead through Rijkhoff just before the break. After the change of sides, Dortmund put pressure on. The best opportunity to equalize was missed by Tom Rothe, who failed to hit the crossbar with a header (75′). Chestnut macaws did better. He kept his nerve from the point after a foul on Alexis Tibidi in the penalty area.
