At Union Berlin, Bayern Munich delivers the next show of strength. After falling behind twice, the Bundesliga leaders managed a 2-2 (1-1) draw late on Saturday.
Harry Kane (90+3), previously invisible for long stretches, equalized with his 13th goal of the season. Danilho Doekhi (27th, 83rd) had previously given Berlin the lead twice. Luis Diaz (38th) equalized the first with a magic goal.
As a result, coach Vincent Kompany’s team missed out on breaking the Bundesliga record of ten wins in a row from the 2015/16 season under Pep Guardiola. Nevertheless, the Munich team remains undefeated and is the clear leader with 28 points, ahead of RB Leipzig (22 points). Union Berlin remains in the middle of the table with 12 points.
Union Berlin’s power start is rewarded
Already in the first half hour the Munich team must have felt like they were at the “Alte Försterei” as they did in the second half in the hard-fought 2-1 Champions League during the week near Paris St Germain: Berlin threw everything into the game and pushed Munich, who had only changed in one position compared to their victory in Paris, back into their own half with grit, commitment and courage.
And that paid off. The Baumgart team celebrated for the first time after just nine minutes when Ilyas Ansah scored with a header from a corner. But after a long check, the millimeter measure of the offside technology revealed that the Union striker had been offside with the tip of his left little toe when he headed the ball.
Manuel Neuer helps with Union leadership
But Berlin put up with it and just carried on. Munich had no choice but to remain in defense mode for the time being. However, that wasn’t enough because FCB simply couldn’t defend the set pieces well. Union defender Doekhi was criminally exposed eleven meters in front of the goal at a corner and, with the support of Manuel Neuer, put a direct pass into the goal to make it 1-0.
The Munich team were behind for the first time this Bundesliga season – and reacted accordingly. From the 30th minute onwards, the favorite took more and more control. The guests’ first goal came in the 34th minute. The Union defense was able to block Kane’s attempt.
Luis Diaz scores brilliantly for Munich
Then came Diaz’s big performance. A pass from Josip Stanisic deep into the left half of the penalty area was actually too long. But the Colombian sprinted after him, grabbed the ball from the baseline, put it past Janik Haberer as he stood up and then nailed it from the baseline over the shoulder of the stunned Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow into the short corner. 1:1.
Bayern were back. And they could have turned the game around before halftime. Diaz (45th) appeared free in front of Rönnow, but stepped into the ground shortly before the shot and missed. In stoppage time, Kane (45+3) put the ball in the Union goal, but was clearly offside.
Berlin’s passion doesn’t let up
Union was warned. The Munich team had obviously shaken off their Champions League lethargy. Nevertheless, the second half was also hard work for the favorites from the south. Union continued to work defensively in a disciplined and passionate manner – and had confidence in itself offensively. The first goal in the second half came again from the hosts. However, Haberer (58th) missed clearly from the right corner of the penalty area.
But then FC Bayern picked up speed again. Joshua Kimmich cleverly played Michael Olise free on the right in the penalty area. Rönnow parried the sharp shot at the near corner (60th). FCB coach Kompany brought a breath of fresh air to the offensive with Lennart Karl. But nothing more than a blocked long-range attempt by Leon Goretzka (68th) on a pass from Karl resulted.
Danilho Doekhi gives Union hope – but then comes Harry Kane
The Köpenickers stayed in the game and didn’t let up with enormous effort. After 75 minutes, Union’s players had already covered five kilometers more than their opponents. Berlin believed in itself and was actually rewarded. After a long free kick from the left, Kane headed it straight to Doekhi. He took the ball briefly in the five and shot it in the bottom right to make it 2-1. The “Alte Försterei” became a madhouse and an even greater challenge for the Bavarians than the Parisian Prinzenpark.
It smelled like a big surprise, but it only turned out to be a small one. Bayern Munich pulled themselves together again and when a long cross was passed, the tired Berlin defense forgot Harry Kane in the penalty area, who actually made it 2-2 with a header from five meters in stoppage time.
